This large print is easily one of Whistlers most evocative and atmospheric etchings. The evanescent, quality of this print, with its brown ink draw the observer in and renders landmarks in Venice, all but unidentifiable.
Whistler once stated that paint should be applied thinly, “like breath on the surface of a pane of glass”; this subtle and reductive etching along the Grand Canal beautifully achieves this effect.
This original impression was purchased directly from Whistler by Queen Victoria for Windsor Castle.
